What do radio personalities do in their spare time? Manny Pacheco, host of “Forgotten Hollywood” at 3 p.m. Saturdays on KSPA/1510 AM and author of a series of books by the same name, is working on a documentary film on character actor Lionel Barrymore.

The challenging part is fund-raising, he said. Dozens of Orange County residents have made contributions. Pacheco has a production team in place and commitments from talent, writers, producers, and all those other people you see named on production credits. Here is the link to check out and decide if you want to consider a contribution:

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Glasgow Fest Offers Cagney Tribute…

February 13th, 2013

Manny P. here…

Glasgow_Film_Festival_logo_1   The ninth edition of Glasgow Film Festival begins on Valentine’s Day and runs until February 24th, the evening of the Academy Awards. Following in the  footsteps of the 2012 Gene Kelly retrospective, this year’s Festival celebrates the fine achievements of Hollywood’s favourite tough guy… James Cagney.

Cagney   Long before Goodfellas or The Godfather, James Cagney was Hollywood’s ultimate gangster.  Born in 1899, he was raised in the tough neighborhoods of New York’s lower East Side, and started his career in vaudeville and Broadway musicals. An electrifying performer, Cagney blazed across the screen in a series of landmark crime stories torn from the bleak headlines of Prohibition-era America. Equally adept at screwball comedy and wartime drama, he won a Best Actor Oscar for his beloved performance as George M. Cohan.

<– James Cagney: Top Of The World, Ma! is also a documentary paying tribute to one of the greatest stars from Hollywood’s Studio Era.

      SUNSET BOULEVARD                                      THE BLACK PIRATE

Also on tap is a special screening of Sunset Boulevard (1950) on 02/16. The Glasgow Film Festival is proud to host the European premiere of its sumptuous 4K restoration from Paramount Pictures. The Out of the Past cinema program also includes a silent era early Technicolor gem starring Douglas Fairbanks called The Black Pirate (1926) on 02/24.

This two-week festival in the heart of Scotland sounds like a real treat!

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Herrick Library Poster Donation…

February 10th, 2013

Manny P. here…

The Margaret Herrick Library is the official repository for cinematic materials related to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. They just received a wonderful collection of “B” movie posters from Hollywood’s Golden Age.

academy-logo_20110408160526-300x61

Almost 1100 in the series have been donated by a Chicago real estate developer. Dwight Cleveland had amassed one of the largest and most historically significant collection in the world. The donated posters document the studio era in the first half of the 20th century, and include examples from Twentieth Century-Fox. A variety of genres are represented, including westerns, war films, musicals, biblical epics, and social drama.

2011_1598_227.jpg

The Cleveland collection has been meticulously cataloged, conserved and photographed. The gift, which will be housed in the library, fills some significant gaps in the Academy’s collection. Posters in the library’s collections are stored in climate-controlled vaults in Beverly Hills, and may be accessed by filmmakers, historians, journalists, students, and the general public. They are frequently shown at the Academy’s own exhibitions, and loaned to international cultural institutions.

By the way, Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History is also housed at the prestigious Margaret Herrick Library. For more information about the Academy’s holdings, visit www.oscars.org.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Library of Congress Class of 2012…

February 6th, 2013

Manny P. here… tom's cabin

The Library of Congress have made their 2012 selections for the National Film Registry. The highlights include:

~ Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1914) – Harriet Beecher Stowe published her great anti-slavery novel in 1852. Adapted as a play in 1853, it had continuously been staged in the US for a century. The World Producing Corp. set an important milestone in American movie history.

L&H_Sons_of_the_Desert_1933~ Sons of the Desert (1933) – Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, along with comedian Charley Chase, star in this riotous comedy. Directed by veteran comedy director William A. Seiter for Hal Roach Studios, the film was ranked among the Top 10 box office hits after its release. Film scholars and fans consider it to be the duo’s finest feature motion picture.

Born_yesterday~ Born Yesterday (1950) – Judy Holliday’s sparkling lead performance as not-so-dumb blonde Billie Dawn anchors this comedy classic based on Garson Kanin’s play, and directed for the screen by George Cukor. Holliday’s work in the film (a role she had previously played on Broadway) was honored with the Academy Award for Best Actress, and it has endured as one of the era’s most finely realized comedy performances.

~ 3:10 to Yuma (1957) – Considered to be one of the finest westerns of the 1950s, it compares favorably with High Noon. This innovative classic from director Delmer Daves starred Glenn Ford and Van Heflin in roles cast against type, and was based on a short story by Elmore Leonard.

220px-Anatomy_of_a_Murder_2~ Anatomy of a Murder (1959) – Director Otto Preminger brought a new cinematic frankness to film with this gripping crime-and-trial story shot on location in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where the incident occurred. James Stewart received his final Oscar nomination for his work. The flick includes an innovative jazz score by Duke Ellington (who makes a cameo appearance), and one of Saul Bass’s most memorable opening title sequences.

215px-Breakfast_at_Tiffanys~ Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1960) – Truman Capote’s acclaimed novella, the author believed that Marilyn Monroe would have been perfect for the film; and judged Audrey Hepburn, who landed the lead, just wrong for the part. However,  audiences disagreed. Critics also have lauded the movie’s director Blake Edwards for scenes using creative visual gags. Composer Henry Mancini’s classic Moon River, featuring lyrics by Johnny Mercer, received critical acclaim. Edwards and Mancini became cinematic collaborators for several decades.

225px-Dirty_harry~ Dirty Harry (1971) – Clint Eastwood’s role as rogue police officer Harry Callahan in director Don Siegel’s controversial paean to vigilante justice had marked a major turning point in the actor’s career. A Top 10 box office hit after its release, the film’s kinesthetic direction and editing laid the aesthetic groundwork for many of the 1970s’ gritty police dramas.

Other highlights include a 1922 Kodachrome Color Motion Picture Test film; and They Call It Pro Football, which has been described as the Citizen Kane of sports movies.

loc-logo

Established by Congress in 1989, the National Film Registry spotlights the importance of preserving America’s unparalleled film heritage. These selections are not considered the best American celluloid of all time, but rather as works of enduring importance to American culture. Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Library of Congress nominates 25 films to the National Film Registry that are culturally, historically or aesthetically significant. They must be at least a decade old. Spanning the period 1897-1999, the movies named to the Registry includes Hollywood classics, documentaries, early works, independent and experimental motion pictures. This year’s selections bring the number of cinema in the Registry to 600.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- The Super Bowl XLVII Connection…

February 2nd, 2013

Manny P. here…

When the Baltimore Ravens take on the San Francisco 49ers in this weekend’s Big Game in New Orleans, a real Hollywood-and-Vine moment will emerge. Ravens right tackle Michael Oher was the subject of the 2009 blockbuster film, The Blind Side.

The award winning film captures the story of the Tuohy family, who adopted the trouble teen from a broken home. Sandra Bullock won an Academy Award for playing the matriarch of the family, who overcame a litany of issues to assure that Oher would succeed in life, including a lingering bigotry of African-Americans from her Memphis neighbors; to NCAA allegations that the Tuohy parents were illegally influencing the high school football sensation to attend the University of Mississippi, their alma-mater. Now, the Tuohy clan is joining the actress on Sunday at the Super Bowl XLVII to support their son.

The_Blind_Side_Evolution_of_a_Game   michael oher

The Baltimore Ravens selected Oher from Ole Miss in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. His life through his final year of high school and first year of college is a subject of Michael Lewis’s 2006 book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game. In fact, Lewis grew up in New Orleans and went to high school with Sean Tuohy, Oher’s adopted dad. And, both have returned to the Big Easy, hoping for a Hollywood-style ending to the Super Bowl.

Inspired by the public’s response to The Blind Side, the Tuohys created the Making it Happen Foundation, which offers financial help to those committed to improving the lives of children living in poverty and unstable homes. According to the Associated Press newswire, they described their foundation grants as modest. In some cases, it might not be more than paying for a flight to help someone make a cross-country trip to adopt a child. Bullock has remained close friends with the entire family since filming the motion picture, and sometimes, her charity work in New Orleans coincides with that of the Tuohys.

One thing is almost certain, Sandra Bullock and Leigh Anne Tuohy will be emphatically yelling out plays from the sidelines to Baltimore coach John Harbaugh. And, so it goes…

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Surviving Andrews Sister Has Died!

January 31st, 2013

Manny P. here… 533px-The_Andrews_Sisters_1952

Patty Andrews, the lead singer of the Andrews Sisters, has passed away. The Andrews Sisters were the most popular singing group of the Swing Era, surpassed in record sales by only Bing Crosby in the 1940s. THE ANDREWS SISTERS (Patty in center)

As I noted on my Forgotten Hollywood program, recently:

Throughout their long career, the sibling team sold well over 75 million records. When they burst upon the music scene in the late 1930s, it shook a very solid musical foundation. They produced a slick harmonic blend, singing at the top of their lungs, while trying – successfully – to emulate the blare of three harmonizing trumpets, with a full big-band playing in concert. The girls were a tour de force.

During World War II, the girls entertained the Allied forces, extensively visiting Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard bases, war zones, hospitals, and munitions factories. They encouraged our citizenry to purchase war bonds. They also helped Bette Davis and John Garfield create the famous Hollywood Canteen.

The Andrews Sisters became the best-selling female vocal group in pop music history, setting records that remain unsurpassed to this day. Only, the Supremes even come close. Their songs and harmonies are still influential, and they have spirited fine entertainers as Bette Midler and Christina Aguilera.

After the death of Laverne in 1967, Patty embarked on a solo career. Maxene died in 1995. The Andrews Sisters remain as big in music sales as Elvis and the Beatles.

   Patty Andrews was 94.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Barnes & Noble is Downsizing…

January 28th, 2013

Manny P. here…

The Wall Street Journal reports that Barnes & Noble is planning to close 30% of their stores over the next decade. A closure rate of 20-stores-per-year is planned. About, 400 to 500 of the B&N stores are expected survive the purge.

bn_logo

The Journal notes, as recently as the 1990s, B&N was known as a carnivorous competitor with the power to wipe out independent bookstores with its steeply discounted product and sprawling aisles, where customers could sip coffee and read in plush chairs. Over the past 15 years, rapid technological change has transformed the company from a dominant retailing force that left smaller booksellers quaking in fear to a struggling giant grasping for a plan to ensure its long-term relevance to the publishing industry.

nook-logo   Until 2009, B&N was opening at least 30 locations annually. But the shift to digital has reduced the demand for bricks-and-mortar outlets. The demise of Borders boosted the literary chain in 2011, but seasonal sales this year were down almost 11% at bookstores and online. Even eBooks are struggling, with Nook holiday sales down from a year before.

Metaphorically, building don’t have a 13th floor; book shops hate Chapter 11!

Manny P. here…

Three weeks have passed in the Indiegogo funding campaign for our FORGOTTEN HOLLYWOOD  Documentary Pilot (Development), and we have garnered great strides because of generous folks, and now, businesses who believe in quality cable television. CONTRIBUTIONS

gp_logo-300x100~ GRANADA PAVILION ($500) – In Granada Hills,  this multi-purpose facility provides all sorts of fine  events, including Bingo on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings; and Ballroom Dancing on the first Friday and third Saturday of each month. Other weekly activities, such as Red Cross Blood Drives and Jazzercise, make this a perfect location in Southern California to hold a variety of special events. Here’s a link for more info:

An early supporter of the Forgotten Hollywood franchise, it’s our plan to use the Granada Pavilion for a first-person interview footage shoot because of its fabulous and spacious rooms. What a tremendous contribution!

DSCN0348~ TONY CHRISTINA ($50) – A retired school teacher, and an avid lover of Volkswagon cars, buses, and related vehicles, Tony is still quite active. Each year, he’s the contest coordinator of the largest  Elvis karaoke contest; aptly called Creme de la King. The finals are held at the Los Angeles County Fair, as part of KaraokeFest. And, he’s the proud owner of the Forgotten Hollywood Book Series.

Each Wednesday afternoon, Tony hosts a trivia contest at Mr. B’s in Los Alamitos, a sport’s bar where you can purchase copies of the paperbacks.

~ MICHAEL ODEN / JENNIFER D. SMITH ($50) – Michael is a computer technical support specialist. Jenn is a teacher, and a Zumba enthusiast. Huntington Beach residents, they spend their leisure time singing karaoke.

During the 2013 campaign, I’m asking my friends, family, and supporters of our FORGOTTEN HOLLYWOOD franchise to help us reach a 120-day goal of $5000. We’re currently at an amazing 16% because of 10 wonderful contributions.

YOU can contribute ANY AMOUNT. This step will ensure Development, and we’ll be able to:

  1. Hire a research archivist to track down footage and photos; and secure licensing
  2. Hire a consultant / casting director to book actors and behind-the-scenes folks from Hollywood’s Golden Age; plus cinematic historians for original interviews
  3. Set up a production shoot to tape these candid moments

Again, here’s the Indiegogo link for your chance to participate:

I’m giddy about your official future consideration… And, a big THANKS to our latest round of contributors and supporters (above).
