“Forgotten Hollywood”- A Readers’ Favorite 5-Star Review…

March 30th, 2013

Manny P. here…

I’m pleased Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History has just received a 5-Star review from the site – Readers’ Favorite. A superb reviewer, Rich Follett, read my latest work and writes:

header-main

MARVELOUS! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN…

FINALfrontcover-sonofforgottenholAs its title suggests, Manny Pacheco’s “Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History” is a treasure trove second volume of little-known facts about the tireless and ubiquitous cast of character actors who helped establish the Hollywood film industry. Readers may not know these actors’ names but their faces are indelible – uniquely talented unsung heroes who gave color and life to many of our best-loved films. Profiled in these pages are familiar contributors such as Frank Morgan from “The Wizard of Oz;” Lon Chaney Jr., who brought us The Wolf Man; Margaret Dumont, who became an icon by enduring countless ‘pie-in-the-face’ indignities at the hands of the Marx Brothers; and the immortal Charles Coburn. Alongside these luminaries appear many lesser-known stars such as Freddie Bartholomew, Alan Hale Sr., and Marjorie Main. Reading their stories brings back to life the heyday of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

5star-shiny-webPacheco’s style is straightforward, unflinching, and devoid of romance. This makes “Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History” even more fascinating. In a world obsessed with fame and the bright lights of ‘show business,’ seeing these often troubled creative personalities without the smoke and mirrors of Hollywood glamour opens a new world for lovers of the cinema. It is easy to see why Pacheco’s second volume “Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History” was the recipient of the coveted USA Book News ‘Best Books’ award. This ‘Who’s Who’ of Hollywood’s character actors is a must-read for all serious fans of American cinema.

Readers’ Favorite donates books they review to the following charities, along with annual financial donations. They make sure money spent on the site is used to bring comfort and aid to those in need, including St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital and Meals on Wheels.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Amazon Acquires Goodreads…

March 29th, 2013

Manny P. here…

Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. is buying the popular book-focused social networking site Goodreads, which was founded in 2007 and now has more than 16 million members. The move is in line with Amazon’s record of acqquiring much of the book world. In the last 15 years, the company has bought AbeBooks.com, Audible.com, Brilliance Audio, The Book Depository, Shelfari, BookFinder.com, BookSurge, CreateSpace, Mobipocket, and (through AbeBooks), 40% of Library Thing.

    goodreadslogo032813   navAmazonLogoFooter__V264586593_

As the leading social networking site devoted to books,  GoodReads is considered a vital  element in addressing the discoverability problem that grew with the spread of eBooks and Amazon, and the collapse of Borders: How would readers discover books if fewer of them were visiting the best source for learning about new books… bricks-and-mortar bookstores? The lingering question is how a site that was prized for its independence and non-commercial credibility will fare as a part of the Amazon empire…

The acquisition is expected to close by July. Goodreads’ headquarters will remain in San Francisco. Its management is expected to stay in place.

   Bulletins as they break!

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Festival du Cannes is Going Retro…

March 25th, 2013

Manny P. here…1681_496490093749752_1088707288_n

Once again, Festival du Cannes is using classic movie stars to promote it’s upcoming European festival. An iconic couple: Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman in A New Kind of Love (1963) personify the spirit of cinema on the official 66th edition poster.

Woodward and Newman were married for many decades until his eventual passing in 2008. They both won Oscars for memorable performances, she for The Three Faces of Eve, and he for The Color of Money (the remake of The Hustler). Last year, a Marilyn Monroe photo was used to ring in the largest annual international film fest.

Bravo to the Festival du Cannes for their homage to classic cinema (the French word for motion picture). The event will be held from May 15th-26th.

BREAKING NEWS…

Forgotten Hollywood cover   Author Fair 06   FINALfrontcover-sonofforgottenhol

The FORGOTTEN HOLLYWOOD Documentary Pilot is going into DEVELOPMENT to start 2013. A screenplay is in the works, which tells the seldom-shared story of Lionel Barrymore’s desire to carry on with his career after a diagnosis of advanced arthritis.

Barrymore’s decision influenced the pioneering government fight to eradicate polio through the March of Dimes campaign. He also motivated President Franklin Roosevelt and Helen Keller to carry on their personal and professional battles against disability. Their paths shaped our nation’s way we see everyday people with crippling disease; and changed Hollywood’s notion of the handicapped. It’s a gripping story that continues to resonate with my readers of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Torch Singer Fran Warren Has Died…

March 20th, 2013

Manny P. here…

Fran Warren was a popular Big Band singer, best known for her hit A Sunday Kind of Love. She worked with top band leaders of the day, including Art Mooney, Billy Eckstine, Charlie Barnet, and Claude Thornhill. She also joined Tony Martin at RCA to perform best-selling duets.                                                  FRAN WARREN —->

Warren had a supporting role in the 1952 comedy film Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd. In the 1950s, she appeared in musical productions, performing in The Pajama Game and Finian’s Rainbow;and later playing the title role in Mame. She toured with Harry James in the 1960s.

She frequently appeared and performed on the television talk shows. Warren was a frequent guest with Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, and Steve Allen. Though her stage career spanned five decades, today’s generation of music critics rarely refer to her contributions as an influential performer. However, in the New York nightclub circuit, she is still remembered and revered. Warren’s only regret is she never fronted for the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

Fran Warren died on her birthday. She was 87.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Van Johnson US Stamp Campaign…

March 17th, 2013

Manny P. here… VJ1

An underswell of support is building for the creation of a postage stamp honoring Van Johnson, the iconic actor who appeared in A Guy Named Joe, Battleground, and The Last Time I Saw Paris, among others. He co-starred with such film luminaries as Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, Irene Dunne, Katharine Hepburn, James Whitmore, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland, Lana Turner, Adolphe Menjou, Lionel Barrymore, Ward Bond, S.Z. Sakall, James Gleason, Phyllis Thaxter, and Angela Lansbury.

A petition is being circulated online. It says:

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee approve the issuance of a Van Johnson stamp to celebrate the legacy of the legendary MGM star, known as “The most adored male in the US.”

Van was active through over sixty years in films, on the stage and in television, until his passing at the age of 92. He handsomely and wondrously represented the Golden Era of Hollywood, and millions of motion picture fans went into mourning when he passed away on December 12, 2008.

In his first big picture, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, about the Doolittle raid in March 1942, Van played the part of Lieut. Ted Lawson. He gave the character “unusual heart and simplicity.” His surge in popularity from that point on was unprecedented. He was a sensation.

Six foot two, with eyes of blue, red hair, and an openly Swedish-look about him, Van Johnson went on reminding almost everybody of their son, or kid brother, or the boy next door.

In his many wonderful films such as State Of The Union, Miracle In The Rain, Three Guys Named Mike, and In The Good Old Summertime, to name a few, Van stays so true to character that it’s not surprising the Van Johnson craze developed beyond the War years, and beyond his wildest dreams.

His bashful charm is still working for him.

This petition stands the test of time and is consistent with public opinion and broad national and international interest, and features an American-related subject.

Various political interests in government are being contacted to support our interest and cause, and to see the project’s implementation and completion.

By signing this petition, I demonstrate my support of the commemorative stamp and express my willingness to allow my Name to be used, and information provided by me to secure a United States Postal Service commemorative stamp honoring Van Johnson.

Please honor this great actor with a US postal stamp in his memory.

I have to admit, the petition language offers a compelling positive argument. Here’s a link if you want to participate in the campaign:
