   Two-time Oscar-winner Jodie Foster has been tapped to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes ceremony in January, recognizing her 40-year career as an actress, director, and movie producer. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has selected her to become the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award.                                      JODIE FOSTER——————->

   After a successful career on the small screen, Foster made the successful jump to feature films, including Taxi Driver, Freaky Friday, Bugsy Malone, The Hotel New Hampshire, Little Man Tate, Maverick, and Nell. She received her Academy Awards for performances in The Accused and Silence of the Lambs.

   Jodie Foster began her career at age three as a Coppertone Girl in a commercial, and debuted on a television weekly series in a 1968 episode of Mayberry R.F.D.  She also had guest-starring roles in The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, Adam 12, Gunsmoke, My Three Sons, Bonanza, and The Partridge Family.

   Life imitated art when John Hinckley Jr. became obsessed with Foster after watching Taxi Driver, and stalked the actress while she was attending Yale. His assassination attempt on President Reagan in 1981, forced her to hold a press conference, and write an essay article (Why Me?) for Esquire Magazine . She’s been known to walk out of interviews if Hinckley is even mentioned. I refer to this as a Hollywood-and-Vine moment; Americana intersecting with Tinsel Town.

   Jodie Foster will be presented with the award at the Golden Globes ceremony in Beverly Hills on January 13th. The star is the first female to receive the accolade since Barbra Streisand in 1999. She’s also the fourth youngest selection in the history of the presentation; her 50th birthday is in a couple of weeks.

   Other actor-recipients include Bette Davis, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Gregory Peck, Joan Crawford, James Stewart, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Gene Kelly; and more recently, Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Lemmon, Gene Hackman, Lauren Bacall, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Jack Nicholson, and last year, Morgan Freeman. Her co-star in Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins, was given the award. Producers and directors as Cecil B. DeMille (of course) Samuel Goldwyn, Walt Disney, Daryl F. Zanuck, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg also accepted the statuette in previous years

   The oldest living Oscar-winning Best Actor has received a unique honor. Prime Minister Perry Christie officially renamed the Paradise Island Bridge: the Sir Sidney Poitier Bridge as part of next month’s 40th anniversary celebration of Bahamian Independence. Hundreds of spectators cheered as the 88-year old actor and Prime Minister arrived for the rechristening.

   Though Sidney Poitier was born in Miami, he spent his childhood on Cat Island, a sparsely populated island in the central Bahamas; then a British colony. At age 10, his family moved to Nassau.

   Sidney Poitier became the first male black actor nominated for a competitive Academy Award for The Defiant Ones in 1958. He actually took home the Oscar for Lilies of the Field in 1963. His breakout part was when he played a member of an incorrigible high school gang in the 1955 classic Blackboard Jungle. The African American actor actively sought non-stereotypical roles throughout most of his career, and he’s credited in altering the landscape in cinema for all minorities.

   Sharing dual-citizenship, in April 1997, Sidney was first appointed Ambassador of the Bahamas to Japan, a position he currently holds. He’s also the Bahamian Ambassador to UNESCO. On August, 2009, Sidney Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest US civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.

   The former Paradise Island Bridge is the largest in the Bahamas. It connects the capital to the Atlantis resort, one of the region’s main tourist destinations.

   The Walt Disney Family Museum is pleased to announce the exhibition, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The Creation of a Classic, celebrating the 75th anniversary of Walt Disney’s first feature-length animated motion picture. On public display from November 15th to April 14th, this exhibit celebrates:

Walt Disney’s vision and the artistry of his dedicated staff, illustrating how they shaped and defined an entirely new American art form through their creation of this groundbreaking film.

   Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The Creation of a Classic features more than 200 works of art, including concept illustrations, early character studies, detailed story sketches, and animation drawings. The Walt Disney Family Museum will also host a series of public programs, events, and activities related to this special tribute. Highlights include:

~ Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will screen throughout November and December.

~  From Page to Screen: The Evolution of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – Lella Smith, creative director of the Walt Disney Animation Research Library and exhibition curator, and J.B. Kaufman, Disney author and historian, will retrace the remarkable chain of adaptations,  leading to its historic premiere. This panel discussionis taking place on Saturday, November 17th at 3p. After the presentation, J.B. will sign copies of his latest work.

~ Animate Your Night: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Opening Celebration –  An after-hours party is set for Friday, November 30th at 7p. A highlight of the evening will be so-called Poison Apple Cider!

~ Animate Your Night: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Old Hollywood Red Carpet Premiere – On Friday, December 21st at 7p, a 1930s, 75th anniversary party for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

   Walt Disney Studios released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Hollywood’s Carthay Circle Theater, December 21st, 1937. Disney’s groundbreaking animation drew worldwide acclaim, winning awards from the New York Film Critics Circle, and Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. The movie also received an honorary statuette at the Oscar ceremony in 1938.

   Hollywood and American history crossed paths as Hurricane Sandy pounded the Eastern Seaboard. One of the casualties of this weather event was the HMS Bounty, a replica used in the filming of Mutiny of the Bounty in 1961. The ship was built for MGM, and it appeared in several feature-length movies, and dozens of television shows and documentaries. Recently, the Bounty was used in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest starring Johnny Depp.

   Mutiny on the Bounty starred Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard, and was based on the novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall. The film retells the 1789 real-life mutiny aboard the Bounty, led by master’s mate Fletcher Christian against the ship’s captain, William Bligh. This was a big-budget remake, the first one produced in 1935. The original epic was directed by Lewis Milestone, and starred Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, and Franchot Tone.

   After filming and a worldwide promotional tour, MGM berthed the ship in St. Petersburg as a permanent tourist attraction – where she stayed until the mid-1980s. In 1986, Ted Turner acquired the MGM film library, and the Bounty with it. He used it to promote his enterprises, and he loaned it to the production company that filmed Treasure Island with Charlton Heston in 1989.  Turner donated the vessel in 1993 to the Fall River Chamber Foundation, which established the Tall Ship Bounty Foundation to operate the ship as an educational venture. In February of 2001, it was purchased from the Foundation by HMS Bounty Organization LLC, which was dedicated to keeping the craft sailing, and using her as a vehicle for teaching the nearly lost arts of square rigged sailing and seamanship.

   The HMS Bounty sank in the high seas off the coast of North Carolina on Monday morning. The Coast Guard reports 14 crew members were air lifted from the sailing facility. The search for the ship’s captain continues, and one person died,  Claudene Christian; no relation to the legendary Fletcher Christian. The 180-foot schooner now lies at the bottom of the Atlantic. It’s a ghastly conclusion to a mighty structure with a historic pedigree.

   In other news, the birthplace of Frank Sinatra, and the childhood home of Grace Kelly (Hoboken, New Jersey) has experienced total devastation with widespread flooding. Elia Kazan’s 1954 film On the Waterfront was shot in this beachfront community. Normalcy isn’t realistically expected  to occur in the area until next Spring.

   Thoughts and prayers go out to the Christian family, and the spouse of the captain, who tried his best to sail out of harm’s way of Hurricane Sandy. It will be remembered as a 2012 perfect storm.

Noted Author And Moose Member Makes Donation To Moose Charities From Book Sales

The middle of September was a special time for Buena Park #1945, for they hosted a member who is a noted author and Hollywood movie expert. Mr. Manny Pacheo was at the lodge to sign his books, and also to present a check to Moose Charities for $2400. When Manny joined the lodge, he had little knowledge of the fraternity, but when he heard the story of Mooseheart School, he decided to help.

He said that for every book sold, he would contribute $1. Well, he sold 2400, and had the check ready to give to the lodge. His book, Forgotten Hollywood, Forgotten History is about the great character actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

   Coronado Island off of San Diego is the place to be this afternoon. The Coronado Public Library presents A Conversation with Edith Head, starring Susan Claassen (below) in her award-winning one-woman show as the legendary Hollywood costume designer.

   Here’s what to expect in an exquisite photo flyer:

   Edith Head received 35 Academy Award nominations and won eight Oscars for costume design. She dressed Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Mae West, Gloria Swanson, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Kim Novak, Natalie Wood, and many other movie stars.

   To compliment the event, an exhibition featuring many of Edith Head’s original costume design drawings will be on display at the Coronado Public Library. The costume sketches served as the working designs for wardrobe used in iconic motion pictures. The exhibition will remain until November 15th. It’s a unique opportunity to go back in time to experience Golden Age of Hollywood.

   Today’s performance is sponsored by the Friends of the Coronado Library. The show will commence at 3:00 pm in the Winn Room, 640 Orange Ave., and it’s totally free to the public. Seating is first come-first served.

   The Hollywood Heritage presents an evening of interest for fans of Paramount Pictures. On November 14th (my birthday), Cecil B. DeMille and Jessy Lasky’s famous Barn will be the site of the charming festivities. The retrospective will include a panel discussion with movie historians, motion picture clips from the studio’s impressive library, and a display of iconic artifacts from their productions, such as wardrobe and jewelry.

   The Hollywood Heritage Museum is located on Highland, across the street from the Hollywood Bowl. The event will begin at 7:30p.

   Make sure to pick up Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History and Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History in their quaint gift shop. These purchases will complete a wonderful evening of entertainment.

   Paramount Pictures is currently celebrating their 100th anniversary.

<— Marjorie Lane was a staple from the talent pool at MGM during the 1930s. However, most movie audiences have never seen her face. She was a vocalist who is best known for dubbing the singing voice of actress and dancer Eleanor Powell in cinematic gems Born to Dance (1936), Broadway Melody of 1936, Rosalie (1937) and Broadway Melody of 1938. Lane notably performed an engaging duet with James Stewart – Easy to Love.

   Marjorie was discovered at a nightclub by movie mogul Louis B Mayer while interpreting the tunes of the great songwriters of the day, including Lane’s favorite composer, Cole Porter. She  married character actor Brian Donlevy, and Eleanor Powell was her Maid of Honor. During the 11-year marriage, they privately associated with Tyrone Power, Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, and Ronald Reagan. Despite her famous associations, she retired from cinema in 1940.

   Marjorie Lane was 100.

   Michael Feinstein’s Great American Songbook Initiative is an archive at the Center for the Performing Arts in the Carmel City Center. It’s a permanent fixture over the Central Indiana landscape, and provide an extraordinary listening experience for audiences; acting as a museum and education facility by day, and a concert venue by night. The performing arts campus includes the 1,600-seat Palladium Concert Hall, the Tarkington 500-seat proscenium theater, and 200-seat Studio Theater. Heartland Truly Moving Pictures is a non-profit arts organization, inspiring filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of cinema.

   Together, they are partnering a new film retrospective, launching over the weekend of November 15th: The Great American Songbook Movie Series. In addition to screenings, selected events will include guest speakers, plus opportunities to explore memorabilia from the Initiative’s archives and upcoming gallery exhibits. Prior to each screening, they’ll demonstrate the ties between classic movies (mostly musicals) and the American Songbook.

 (By the way, this is the primary focus each week on my Forgotten Hollywood radio show on Financial News and Talk AM 15-10, Saturdays at 3p, in Southern California)

   THANK YOU to ShowMag.com for a home page spotlight, and a really favorable review of Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History. Here’s what reviewer Ben Miles writes:

First there was Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History. It was a thin but readable study of character actors from cinema’s Golden Age. Now, author Manny Pacheco gives us more of the same in his sequel treatise, Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History. The names are (slightly) different but the premise is the same. Pacheco lets us in on the stories behind the familiar faces of actors and actresses we’ve seen on the silver screen over the years but may not have known their names – much less the lowdown on their lives.

For example, do you recall the actress Marjorie Main? She rose to Tinseltown prominence playing Ma Kettle in nearly a dozen Ma and Pa Kettle movies – winning an Oscar nomination for her first turn as Ma in 1947’s The Egg and I, opposite Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert. Unfortunately for her, Main suffered from what today we would likely call obsessive-compulsive disorder to the point that her fixation with cleanliness would often be disrupting to the filmmaking process due to Main’s refusal to touch others or objects.  Main’s obsession with being in a sterile environment, in order to avoid contact with germs, eventually ended her long Hollywood career.

       ANDY DEVINE    SYDNEY GREENSTREET     PETER LORRE

Chapter One is titled Fat Man and Little Boy, and it spotlights both Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Interestingly, Greenstreet – who is best recalled as the plus-size thespian who played against Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca – didn’t begin his cinematic career until he was 62 years old, and it was over within eight years. Although Greenstreet and the diminutive Lorre (whose filmography and movie-land legend has arguably been more enduring than his counterpart) never had a scene together in Casablanca, Pacheco affectionately and accurately describes the two actors as motion pictures’ first odd couple. After all, movie fans still pair Greenstreet and Lorre in their collective celluloid remembrances.

In fifteen chapters and 161 densely written pages, Pacheco introduces (or reintroduces) us to a full community of twentieth century character actors, including Frank Morgan – who ended up playing The Wizard in the classic The Wizard of Oz only after the inimitable and often inebriated W.C. Fields turned down the role. Then there is Andy Devine – whose gravelly voice and gentle disposition made him a filmmaker’s favorite. Also included is the elegant Gilbert Roland, whose handsome visage graced such films as The Seahawk, with Errol Flynn, and The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima, about the purported appearance of the Virgin Mary before three Portuguese children.

One of Pacheco’s stated goals of writing each edition of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History is to intertwine actual history lessons with the true tales of these stalwart support players. For instance, we learn that S.Z. Sakall – who so memorably played, Carl, the head waiter at Rick’s Café in Casablanca –was himself a Hungarian refugee who fled to America in 1939 to elude the Nazi takeover of his home continent. Also, it is instructive and enlightening to see a vintage (1944) photo of the swarthy Cesar Romero all decked out in his real life U.S. Navy uniform (Romero may be best remembered as the original Joker on television’s Batman series).

While Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History is primarily aimed at fans of film, aficionados of fine acting, and history and trivia buffs, it also makes for good use as a reference guide or as a fun, pass-the-time reader.    The American Film Institute (AFI) announced HITCHCOCK,  starring Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock, Helen Mirren as his wife Alma, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins, will have its world premiere on Thursday, November 1st. This event takes place at  their Opening Night Gala of AFI FEST 2012, presented by Audi. The motion picture is based on Stephen Rebello’s 1990 non-fiction literary work – Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.

   Hitchcock centers on the relationship between the director and his wife during the making of Psycho; centering on Wisconsin murderer Ed Gein, the real-life inspiration for the character of Norman Bates, to the release of the groundbreaking film in 1960.

   Alfred Hitchcock has a rich legacy at the American Film Institute. He was the recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1979, the highest honor for a career in film. Four of his productions rank among the greatest films of all time on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies list: VERTIGO (#9), PSYCHO (#14), REAR WINDOW (#48), and NORTH BY NORTHWEST (#55). Helen Mirren also has ties with AFI. She was presented with a Doctorate of Fine Arts, honoris causa from the AFI Conservatory in 2011.

   AFI FEST 2012, celebrating its 26th year, will take place November 1st – 8th at the historic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Chinese 6 Theatres, the Egyptian Theatre, and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Free individual tickets to AFI FEST 2012 screenings and galas will be available to AFI members on Wednesday, October 24th at a 24-hour advance window, before they become available to the general public on October 25th.

   The world’s most popular film noir festival, NOIR CITY will return for its eleventh annual odyssey: January 25th – February 3rd, 2013. According to their website, Film noir devotees will spend ten glorious days and nights watching double features the way they were meant to be seen: on the big screen, in lustrous 35mm, in one of America’s great movie palaces, San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre. The Film Noir Foundation will be presenting celebrated classics of the genre, as well as, wonderful rarities; some saved from extinction by the FNF. The opening weekend’s special guest star is a legendary performer! AND, expect a premiere of the FNF’s latest restoration!

   On the closing weekend, fans will again have the opportunity to time-travel to the 1940s with the return of the Noir City Nightclub, Saturday night, February 2nd. You will enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a sensational lineup of live entertainment in a posh vintage venue— the Regency Lodge. Festival screenings are timed so you can attend the nightclub without missing any of the films! Proceeds from the festival help fund the FNF’s preservation efforts year round.    The Richard J. Riordan Main Branch Public Library is showcasing the upcoming election. The message is clear: Exercise your right to vote. It’s an American gift  promoted through literacy.

   This locale has politics fever! We’ve all been watching the debates, reading the news, and anticipating Tuesday, November 6th. It only makes sense their newest window display  features an array of election-related goodies. The Richard J. Riordan Library is at Flower and Fifth St., in the heart of Downtown, Los Angeles.

   As a special election day treat, come by The Library Store on November 6th, 2012, and they will give you a special Voter Discount if you show them your I VOTED sticker! No matter who you endorse or what Measure you support… Democrat or Republican… just make sure to VOTE!

   The Victoria and Albert Museum in Great Britain is the world’s largest museum of design and decorative arts, housing a permanent collection of over 4.5 million artifacts. Named after Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, it was founded in 1852.

   Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz are to go on display in England for the first time as part of the V&A’s Hollywood Costume exhibition. They’re on loan from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington DC. The pair will be on show at the London museum from October 20th – November 18th, alongside Dorothy’s blue and white gingham pinafore. The most famous footware in the history of Hollywood were created by Gilbert Adrian, MGM’s exquisite  wardrobe designer.

   Four other shoes have been accounted for in museums or private collections. A fifth pair was stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in 2005, and never found.

   The exhibition, which runs from October 20th – January 27th, and features 130 costumes, including garments worn by Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot; Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s; Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark; and Bob De Niro in Taxi Driver. The curator of this event is Deborah Nadoolman Landis, an Oscar-nominated costume designer, and wife of director John Landis.

<- The V&A holds some of the most impressive programs in London; this in part because of the large galleries devoted to temporary exhibitions. Each year, you will find a dozen different exhibits being staged, and covering all areas of collections. One of the more impressive displays in recent years was Grace Kelly: Style Icon in 2010.

~ Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History has reached 2600 hundred units sold. My initial work is steamrolling along from a sustained interest in the Studio Era. Personal thanks to literary patrons at the 2012 Duarte Festival of Authors. They all discovered the paperback I wrote in 2009. ~ Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History has been added at a library in the Glendale Public Library System. The Grandview Branch is located at 1535 Fifth St., a neighborhood locale. Thomas Jefferson Elementary is directly across the street. A few blocks east on Glenwood Rd. are three public schools: Hoover High, Toll Middle School, and Mark Keppel.

~ Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History and Son of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History have been included at two locations at the Orange County Public Library. My first work was added to San Juan Capistrano Branch; while my latest paperback has been sent to my hometown Cypress Branch.
