Manny P. here…

“`It is time to submit my SAG Awards Ballot, highlighting celluloid performances in 2022.  It was clearly a sub-par year in movies. This was the year most affected by Covid 19 restrictions, since there is a lag in film production. Here are my selections:

OUTSTANDING MALE: Brendan Frasier  (The Whale

“`Brendan Frasier gave a career performance while mired in prosthetics.  His theatrical effort could thrive in any year. Outstanding performances were also delivered by Colin Farrell  (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Austin Butler (Elvis). I honestly loved Adam Sandler’s comedic turn in Hustle.  Respected actor Bill Nighy rounds out the field. Eddie Redmayne, honored in the supporting category, should have been considered here for his part in The Good Nurse, since it was a starring role.

  OUTSTANDING FEMALE:  Cate Blanchett  (TAR)

“`A most competitive field, it would be very easy to make a case for any of the five nominees, particularly Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Cate Blanchett.  I give the nod to Blanchett, maybe her best job in a career filled with iconic turns. Yeoh is a popular choice among voters, but Blanchett delivers a layered multi-faceted effort with scene-chewing dialogue. I offer sincere kudos to Viola Davis (The Woman King),  Ana de Armas (Blonde), and Danielle Deadwyler (Till) for their top-notch efforts.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING MALE: Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once)

“`Honestly, I am not part of the bandwagon that loved Everything Everywhere All at Once. Movies that rely mostly on special effects to paint a story rarely interest me. That said, Ke Huy Quan stole the movie with a tour-de-force energized performance. I would love to see Brendan Gleeson get his due for The Banshees of Inisherin,  but I will not deny the pristine effort by Quan. Paul Dano was solid in The Fablemans.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING FEMALE:  Hong Chau (The Whale)

“`I am voting for the long shot in this category.  Every moment Chau was on the screen, I felt her character’s pain. I adored Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once). I am such a big fan of Angela Bassett and Jamie Lee Curtis. They have both done better work.

OUTSTANDING CAST IN A MOTION PICTURE:  The Banshees of Inisherin

“`This is between The Banshees of Inisherin and Women Talking. Both had smart scripts and a strong acting ensemble. Why was Babylon considered? Damian Chazelle really missed the mark, and that is saying a lot, since  Whiplash and La La Land are two favorite films of mine over the last thirty years. I would have rather seen TAR, She Said or Empire of Light considered. I mildly liked The Fabelmans.

~ 2022 Top 10:  1. TAR  2. She Said  3. Empire of Light  4. The Banshees of Inisherin  5. Women Talking   6. A Man Called Otto   7. Death on the Nile   8. The Woman King  9. Top Gun Maverick  10. The Whale

“’The SAG Awards airs on February 26th on Netflix’s YouTube Channel. Let us see how I do this year.

Until next time>                               “never forget”
