“Forgotten Hollywood”- Hitchcock Blonde is Gone…
“`Eva Marie Saint was a movie star and actress. Her work was memorable in iconic motion pictures. In a career spanning eight decades, she received an Academy Award, as well as a nod for a Golden Globe. She became the oldest living Oscar winner and one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
“`Saint studied acting at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and graduated in 1946. A theater on its campus is named after her. Her early work was cut on Broadway and on live early TV. A critic even dubbed Saint the Helen Hayes of television.
“`She made her cinematic debut in Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront, opposite Marlon Brando. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and earned her a Best Supporting Actress accolade.
“`Her filmography included roles in Raintree County, A Hatful of Rain, Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, Exodus, The Russians are Coming – The Russians are Coming, The Sandpiper and Grand Prix. After 1972, Saint sporadically worked, mostly in television dramas.
“`Film critic Leonard Maltin observed that Saint was a luminous blond leading lady who found few vehicles worthy of her talents. British Film Institute noted throughout her long career, Saint was able to combine Hollywood glamour with Actors Studio integrity.
