“`National Galleries Scotland celebrating modern art is presenting Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema, now until February 2022. Harryhausen helped elevate stop motion animation to an art. His innovative effort, from the 1950s until his retirement, changed the way special effects were presented in cinema. It is the largest and widest-ranging exhibition of Ray Harryhausen’s body of work, with newly restored and previously unseen material from his archive.

“`Harryhausen’s cinematic efforts included Jason and the Argonauts, the Sinbad films of the 1950s and 1970s, One Million Years B. C., and Mighty Joe Young. He inspired a generation of filmmakers such as Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg, and his influence on blockbuster cinema can be felt to this day.

“`Titan of Cinema traces Harryhausen’s career as a special effects guru, whose only limits was his boundless imagination. Titan of Cinema captures his creative processes:  from preparatory sketches, through model making, and finally, his bringing characters to life.

“`There is an incredible display of Harryhausen’s creatures.  See memorable characters like Medusa, the Kraken and Bubo the owl, as well as his iconic skeleton army from Jason and the Argonauts. Check out Harryhausen’s sketches and storyboards as well as original film posters. Find out how Dynamation works (layering backgrounds and footage of real actors, showing them interacting with models on celluloid) which Harryhausen developed and used with incredible effect.

“`While in Scotland, check out Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema.

Until next time>                               “never forget”
