“Forgotten Hollywood”- Two Have Passed…

April 8th, 2015

Manny P. here…

Stan Freberg was the comic genius who lampooned American history in his landmark recordings  and was hailed as the father of the funny commercial. His face might not have been as recognizable as other humorists, but his influence was arguably greater, thanks to a huge body of work assembled over 70 years that encompassed comedy albums, advertising jingles, radio, television, and nightclub performances.

He planned to attend Stanford University on a speech scholarship, but the summer before, he decided to visit Hollywood on a lark to see if he might have a chance in show business. He recalled taking a bus to Hollywood Boulevard and walking into the first office building he saw, one housing a talent agency called Stars of Tomorrow. On the strength of his impressions of famous people, and his distinctive booming voice, the agency sent him to Warner Brothers’ cartoon division, where he was hired the next day.

The satirist had his greatest impact through records and syndicated radio shows that began in the mid-1950s. His masterpiece was the pioneering funny concept album Stan Freberg Presents The United States of America, a work produced in two volumes that sounded seamless although they were recorded 35 years apart. They took the listener from the time of Columbus’ arrival in North America up to the time of World War I.                                      STAN FREBERG ——>

He appeared in It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World; and he voiced numerous cartoon characters for such work as Alice in Wonderland, Lady and the Tramp, It’s Time for Beany, and The Bugs Bunny Show. He was also a favorite of Ed Sullivan. Stan turned his attention in the late 1950s to advertising. He won two dozen CLIO awards, advertising’s equivalent of the Oscar. He was inducted into the Halls of Fame of radio, songwriters, and animation.

All the while, he continued to work. In recent years, he continued to be a panelist at the Comic Con pop-culture convention. In November, he was honored in The Genius of Stan Freberg, a retrospective hosted by The Simpson’s Harry Shearer, and attended by the Monkees’ Micky Dolenz, Weird Al Yankovic, and others.

A personal favorite of mine on vinyl was his send-up of Gunsmoke. It made quite an impression on me about the nature of comedy. The venerable Stan Freberg was 88.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- Downton Abbey Costumes on Tour…

April 7th, 2015

Manny P. here…character-image-hd

Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times is currently at the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. Highlighting the fashion from one of the most widely watched television programs in the world, the traveling exhibition showcases nearly forty period costumes and jewelry from the hit series, Downton Abbey. The exhibit will traverse the nation after May 25th, with stops in Anaheim, South Bend, Cincinnati, Richmond, Chicago,  Oshkosh, and Nashville.  ELIZABETH McGOVERN ->

Biltmore House, the exhibition’s premiere location, strikingly resembles Highclere Castle where the series is filmed, making it easy for guests to imagine how the Vanderbilts and their employees lived a century ago. Ranging from servants’ uniforms to lavish evening gowns, the award-winning costumes reflect how world events—the sinking of the Titanic and the evolving roles of women—influenced fashions.

bh_downton_exhibit_3__large

Set in the early twentieth century, Dressing Downton traces the events that uprooted British society on the eve of World War I and ushered in the Roaring Twenties, the Jazz Age, and a new way of life. The exhibit highlights a time in British history when industry, fashion, and politics were changing drastically. This exhibition quickly filled its three-year tour, which says something about our obsession with all things Brit.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- I Love Lucy Statue Drawing Ire / Fear!

April 6th, 2015

Manny P. here…lucille-ball-statue

A number of fans of Lucille Ball wants her statue removed from a park in her hometown, saying the ugly likeness does not do justice to the I Love Lucy star. The life-size bronze statue in Celoron, New York, has been likened to actor Steve Buscemi, singer Conway Twitty, the Beetlejuice snake, and other unflattering comparisons. Even Mayor Scott Schrecengost has gone on record saying he doesn’t care for the statue, which shows the comic star holding a bottle of the fictional Vitameatavegamin.

And yet, it has been a tourist draw since 2009 for Celoron, the comedian’s birthplace, attracting visitors who pose with the statue for pictures. A resident of Jamestown, where Ball grew up, started the Facebook page in 2012: We Love Lucy! Get Rid of this Statue. The founder of the Facebook group would like to see the statue replaced with a new one outside a planned Comedy Hall of Fame in Jamestown, home to the Lucy-Desi Museum & Center for Comedy and the annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival.

The story appeared on Yahoo! News this past week, which spread over the internet, reviving debate about what to do. The residents were seriously considering a crowd-funding campaign to raise the needed funds. In the meantime, the statue of Lucy is scaring children and generating a public debate.

The result of all this public attention… Instead of the sculptor receiving $8000 to $10,000 to replace the fixture, he is now offering to refurbish the statue on his own dime. Let’s just hope people will love the new Lucy.

As Ricky Ricardo might have surmised… We have some splaining to do!

“Forgotten Hollywood”- We Remember Richard Dysart…

April 5th, 2015

Manny P. here…L.A. Law

Richard Dysart had a meticulous career on stage, in motion pictures, and television. He is best remembered as the senior partner Leland McKenzie in the long-running courtroom drama, L.A. Law. He finally earned an Emmy for that assignment after three previous nominations.

Dysart was a founding member of the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. George C. Scott appeared with the company, and he and Dysart became good friends. Richard later joined Scott in a New York revival of The Little Foxes. Scott often suggested he be cast in many of his movies. He created the Broadway role of the coach in Jason Miller’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, That Championship Season, for which he won a Drama Desk Award in 1972.                              RICHARD DYSART —->

His finest moment in cinema was when he played the doctor in Being There, providing reliable support to Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, Melvyn Douglas (who won an Oscar), and Jack Warden. He also co-starred in The Hospital, Pale Rider, The Hindenburg, The Thing, The Day of the Locust, The Falcon and the Snowman, The Last Days of Patton, Mask, An Enemy of the People, Back to the Future Part III, and Wall Street.

In 1990, Dysart was awarded a fitting Honorary Doctorate of Law at Emerson College in Boston. It complimented his Master’s Degree.

The absolutely wonderful Richard Dysart was 86.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- LA Commits To Theater Preservation

April 2nd, 2015

Manny P. here…

I want to thank my friend Laura Williams for providing me with robust information on the Downtown Los Angeles commitment to Golden Age cinema. Among her findings:

`

Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation Logo~ Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation – Here’s a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting, preserving, restoring, and sustaining the operation of Southern California’s historic theatres. Many were built in the first half of the 20th Century. Among the locales under the banner of LAHTF include the Shrine Auditorium, Wilshire Ebell TheatreEl Capitan Theatre, Pantages Theatre, Egyptian Theatre, Pasadena Playhouse, and Rialto Theatre in South Pasadena.

Just yesterday, LAHTF was on hand to witness the late night installation of the new state-of-the-art IMAX laser projectors in the historic Chinese Theatre. The projectors are about twice the size as the old IMAX Digital.

`

WT35-Broadway-annie~ Los Angeles Conservancy / Broadway Historic Theatre & Commercial District Walking Tour – Once the entertainment epicenter of Los Angeles, Broadway was home to dozens of major retail and clothing stores, as well as twelve movie palaces built between 1910 and 1931. Although the theatres no longer regularly show films (special event venue, filming location, and retail are among the current uses), their elegant presence remains.

This is primarily an exterior tour that visits the interiors of one or more of the following: the Los Angeles TheatreTheatre at the Ace (formerly United Artists Theatre), and the Orpheum Theatre. Now celebrating its 35th anniversary, these tours are usually held on Saturdays at 10a.

`

LA Conservancy logo~ Los Angeles Conservancy / Last Remaining Seats – An annual seasonal program of special screenings of classic motion pictures at many of these historic theatres. Tickets for our 2015 season are now on sale exclusively to Conservancy members for $16. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, April 8th at 10a for $20.

The 2015 Summer slate includes Psycho / Million Dollar Theatre (6/10); City Lights / Los Angeles Theatre (6/13); How to Marry a Millionaire / Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (6/20); Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory / Orpheum Theatre (6/24); Raiders of the Lost Ark / Theatre at the Ace (6/27). Each screening is at 8p. By the way, City Lights is being shown at the original location where it premiered in 1931, which is historically quite cool!

`

It’s obvious there is a groundswell of support in preserving the historic areas and aspects of Hollywoodland.

TCLogo   The interview on THERAPYCABLE CHANNEL will summarize the story of a community directly influenced by a Hollywood production that included director George Stevens, and actors Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and the final film made by James Dean. It explores how a Mexican American community was directly influenced by the epic production, Giant.

The 1954 motion picture was based on a novel by Edna Ferber, and explored the racial divide between Anglos and Latinos, class division, feminism, and the real story of a poor Texas town of Murfa, where the movie was originally made. The children in the cinematic classic are now grown up and reflect about their time in the spotlight.

“Forgotten Hollywood”- A Fractured Fairy Tale…

March 20th, 2015

Manny P. here…rocky_bullwinkle

Rocky J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose will soon be coming home to the Sunset Strip after a three-year absence.

West Hollywood’s Rocky and Bullwinkle statue first popped up in front of Jay Ward Productions in 1961 , the production company behind The Rocky and Bullwinkle Showand Cap’n Crunch. Bullwinkle, holding Rocky on an outstretched palm, was posed to parody a billboard for the Sahara Hotel erected across the street that featured a showgirl. Ward’s family has now offered to donate the statue to West Hollywood, and the WeHo City Council voted to accept the gift last night.

While Jay Ward Productions stopped making new cartoons in the ’70s and eventually closed in 2002, the statue remained until 2012 when DreamWorks Animation—who had bought the rights to the cartoon—worked with Ward’s daughter to restore it. The statue was then moved into the Paley Center in 2014 as part of the Jay Ward Legacy Exhibit.

The statue’s new home will be near a parking lot at 8775 Sunset Boulevard. WeHo City Council will have to appropriate $25,000 for set up. However, the Gibson Guitar Foundation is putting up $20,000.

WeHo is still working on the installation plan, the statue may be unveiled in mid-to-late July. Send a bulletin to Frostbite Falls, Minnesota!

“Forgotten Hollywood”- A Word From Robert Osborne…

March 19th, 2015

Manny P. here…

   This just in…

To all you members of the TCM family:

Robert OsborneI’m Robert Osborne and I want to tell you about a funny thing that happened to me on the way to this year’s Film Festival. I’ve been putting off a minor health procedure (as everyone tends to do now and then). I planned to take care of it as soon as the Festival was over but my doctor said, “enough already, Osborne. Let’s get this done now so that sooner rather than later you can get back to introducing movies on TCM.”

So, that’s what I’m in the process of doing right now—taking care of that medical procedure. The downside is that it means I won’t be joining you at this year’s Festival in Hollywood—very disappointing for me because for the past six years the TCM Classic Film Festival has been one of the things I’ve enjoyed most: sharing the Festival with you, the great sense of community we have, the conversations with so many of you Festival goers as well as the gifted actors and artisans who are part of the classic films we show, the pure joy of it all. But as we all know, one’s health is a gift, and has to be protected and put first.

Rest assured that the many talented hosts at the Festival, including Ben Mankiewicz, will be helping you have the very best Festival going experience. I know you’ll enjoy the wonderful films we have programmed, and meeting the gifted artists who are participating in this exceptional event. Enjoy every moment of it and make as many memories and new friends as you can. And rest assured, I’ll be seeing you again, very soon.

But right now: on with the show.

March 18th, 2015

GoodfellasManny P. here…

The cast of Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas will reunite for the motion picture’s 25th anniversary at the Tribeca Film Festival. It is a cinematic adaptation of the 1986 non-fiction book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese. The film narrates the rise and fall of Lucchese crime family associate Henry Hill and his friends over a period from 1955 to 1980.

The festival announced Wednesday that a re-mastered version of the gangster film classic will close the 14th annual Tribeca Film Festival on April 25th. Following the screening at New York’s Beacon Theatre, Jon Stewart will host a conversation with Scorsese and the cast, including Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco, Ray Liotta, and Paul Sorvino.

Goodfellas is often considered one of the greatest films of all time, both in the crime genre and in general, and was deemed culturally significant and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress. Scorsese has followed  it up with two more films about organized crime: Casino and The Departed.

The festival will run April 15th-26th.
