   The 53rd and 54th copy of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History have been added by two branches of Hennepin County Library in Minnesota. Residents of Minneapolis and nearbye Minnetonka will now be able to read my paperback. In fact, I’ve learned that seven requests have been made by local patrons to add my book!

   Hennepin County is named in honor of the 17th-century explorer Father Louis Hennepin. Two great waterfalls were  discovered by Hennepin:  Niagara Falls, with the largest voluminous flow in North America; and Saint Anthony Falls in Minneapolis, the only waterfall on the Mississippi River. Historians credit the Franciscan friar as the first European to step at the site of present-day Hannibal, MO.

   I urge you to explore the Central and Minnetonka branches of Hennepin County Library.

   INDIE BOUND is a Nationwide network of Independent Bookstores working as a network to sell books. They are essentially mom-and-pop locations franchised by local community vendors trying to make a living.    One of the talented co-writers of the iconic I Love Lucy has died. Madelyn Pugh was part of Lucille Ball’s creative team throughout her radio and television career. Together with her partner, Bob Carroll, Jr., they spent 50 years collaborating on shows including My Favorite Husband, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, Here’s Lucy, and Life With Lucy. They also received writing credit on films  starring Ball; most notably – Forever Darling and Yours, Mine, and Ours.

   However, Pugh will be best remembered as the creator of the Lucy character. Head writer Jess Oppenheimer supervised the project while they worked closely with Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. As part of an unprecedented strategy, Pugh and Carroll created a live vaudeville act for the acting couple, which became the basis for the pilot episode of I Love Lucy. Pugh later authored Laughing with Lucy: My Life with America’s Leading Lady of Comedy.

   Pugh and Carroll also wrote for other television programs. Among them, The Steve Allen Show, The Paul Lynde Show, and The Mothers-In-Law. On Alice, the two collaborators served as Executive Producers. They received a Golden Globe for their work as Writers in a Comedy Series.

   Madelyn Pugh died peacefully on Wednesday in Santa Monica at the age of 90.

   The Hammond Public Library in northwest Indiana is the 52nd branch to carry Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History. Located in Lake County, it’s considered part of the Chicago Metropolitan area.

   Noted buildings in the area include the Horseshoe Casino and the Gothic Masonic Temple. When the ornate temple cornerstone was laid in 1907, the featured speaker of the day was U.S. Vice President Charles Fairbanks.

   Famous sports figures who have played for the Hammond Ciesar All-Americans basketball team in the early forties:  John Wooden, and Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau. NFL player and commentator Irv Cross is from Hammond. In 1972, the Hammond Little League Team came in second to Tapei in the Little League World Series.

   However, the most enduring legacy for the town, and their most famous residents, are Jayne and Joan Boyd. They’re famously known as the Doublemint Twins. A savvy advertising campaign that began in 1956 by Chicago’s Wrigley Company, the Boyd sisters appeared in a number of television commercials until 1963. The successful promotion lasted into the 1980’s with a slew of various twins.

   Jayne and Joan live private lives today as adults. For a short time, Hammond honored the siblings as local stars.

   In under three weeks, Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History has confirmed over 100 books in sales. Our journey now stands at 1715 paperbacks purchased. I also had my first eBook customer (on Amazon KINDLE) in less than a 24 hour period. WOW!

   Again, I’d like to thank Danforth Distribution for providing the lowdown from my monthly report. One can assume I’m still reaping the benefit of Christmas sales. In the literary world,  self-published authors receive their earned revenue after a 90-day lag time from traditional distribution centers including Amazon, Baker and Taylor, Ingram, and Partners West. I don’t mind sharing the reality of this personal information with my bloggers.

   I’m thrilled over the momentum generated by this extraordinary news!

   Abraham Lincoln is the focus of two very special cinematic creations. The Conspirator, directed by Robert Redford, is set for release nationwide this weekend.

   The story delves into the idea that the conspiracy to assassinate the president might have an untold story. Redford presents this notion: There may have been a person or two who escaped who were complicit in the crime. This film looks to have quite a compelling story.

   After Lincoln’s demise, our country was placed in a chaotic situation. We know that the unfortunate call for Reconstruction in the South by President Andrew Johnson set in motion the rise in the popularity of the Ku Klux Klan, and the eventual  application of unfortunate Jim Crow laws for generations, which lasted into the middle of the 20th Century.

   Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg has cast a couple of two-time Oscar winners in a motion picture project based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, which carefully examines the president’s relationship with his confidantes. Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field is set to play the president and Mary Todd Lincoln. The production will begin in the Fall, with an expected release in 2012.

   Raymond Massey, Henry Fonda, John Carradine, and Walter Huston are among the many actors who have played the 16th President of the U.S. in a staggering 212 classic movies. Like John F. Kennedy, the fascination with Lincoln continues to captivate the public…

   Meanwhile, endless possibilities are compelling. The Associated Press recently reported:

eBook sales jumped and surpassed purchases of hardcovers and mass market paperbacks, according to a new survey. The Association of American Publishers   reported that E-sales more than doubled, from $32.4 million in January, 2010 to $69.9 million in January, 2011.

Not all AAP members participated, but the survey includes results from Random House, Simon & Schuster, and other leading publishers. According to Carolyn Reidy, President and CEO of Simon & Schuster:

 “eBooks were approximately 8 to 9 percent of the general trade market at the end of 2010, and it’s expected to reach 12 to 15 percent of the market this year… The new numbers pretty much reflect reality.”

   I appeal to readers who find the printed book a quaint thing of the past (personally I don’t), and check out the next wave of our literary future.    Along the banks of the Sacramento River, near Redding, CA, lies the Red Bluff branch of the Tehama Public Library. This is the newest branch to carry Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History.

   The community is well known for the Red Bluff Round-Up, one of California’s largest rodeos. The Red Bluff’s Little League team was the runner-up in the 1974 Little League World Series. Among the famous folks who are from the Red Bluff area:  Tom Hanks and Leo Gorcey, one of the Dead End Kids. In fact, these wise-cracking boys will be featured in my next book in the Forgotten Hollywood-series.

   I welcome the 51st library to carry my paperback.

   Sidney Lumet, the fine iconic director of Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, and The Verdict, has died. Known for bringing social realism to his work, Lumet began his directorial career in live television of the 1950’s.

   As a child, Sidney Lumet appeared on Broadway in Dead End (in 1935), and The Eternal Road. After returning from World War II, he became involved with  The Actor’s Studio. Lumet organized an off-Broadway group, and was chosen as its director. He continued directing in summer stock theatre, while teaching acting at the High School of Professional Arts.

   Lumet gained famed as a television director working on the You Are There series with Walter Cronkite. He also directed original plays for Playhouse 90, Kraft Television Theatre, and Studio One, filming about 200 episodes.    CHILD STAR SIDNEY LUMET –>

  His first theatrical movie was the the memorable 12 Angry Men, selected for the assignment by its producer (and its star) Henry Fonda. His resume also includes Long Day’s Journey Into Night, The Pawnbroker, Murder on the Orient Express, Equus, and The Wiz. Lumet’s films  were nominated 46 times in various categories, and awarded six Oscars, including four in the  cinematic achievement, Network. In 2005, he received his only Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

   Sidney Lumet was 86.

   An Italian research team is traveling to Florence to dig up the remains of a Renaissance woman who they believe posed for Leonardo da Vinci for the Mona Lisa portrait. This project aims to locate the remains of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a silk merchant. Art lovers have long linked Gherardini to the iconic painting.

   Giorgio Vasari, a 16th-century biographer, wrote that da Vinci painted a portrait using Gharadini, who was born in 1479. A few years ago, an amateur Italian historian said he had found a death certificate showing that she died in 1542, with her burial spot specifically in central Florence.

   The project follows a popular trend that uses CSI-like methods in art history, and has drawn (no pun intended) its share of criticism based on the inconclusive nature of the research. Some scholars have suggested  that such scientific techniques add little when it comes to appreciating or understanding a work of art. If successful, the research might unveil targeted characteristics of Gherardini’s face matching those in the painting, answering whether she could be the actual model-in-question.

   The first step… ground-penetration radar to search for the bones that are compatible with Gherardini’s. The group will also look for traces of possible diseases or bone structure to match what we know about Gherardini’s life. If such bones are identified, the researchers will conduct carbon dating and extract DNA, which will be compared to DNA extracted from the bones of Gherardini’s children, some of whom are also buried in Florence.

   Finally, if skull fragments are found, depending on how well-preserved they are, the research group might attempt a facial reconstruction. This step will be crucial in determining whether Gherardini was indeed the subject with the famous smile for Leonardo da Vinci.
