   Congratulations to Eli Wallach, who shall receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in a private ceremony tonight. The 94-year old character actor has previously won Emmys and Tonys for his stellar work on television and stage. He was also one of the major contributors to the development of the Spaghetti Western genre of the 1960’s.

   Among the more well-known roles he has appeared:  The Misfits, The Magnificent Seven, How the West Was Won, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Godfather Pt. III, and The Two Jakes. And, legend has it – Wallach was originally cast in From Here To Eternity. However, Frank Sinatra replaced him with the reported influence by his Underworld connections. Sinatra went on to win an Oscar for his role (as Maggio) in the film. Wallach would wait two years before his motion picture debut in Baby Doll.

   On television, he was a staple during its Golden Age, and was cast in numerous programs including:  Philco Television Playhouse, Studio One, Playhouse 90, Naked City, and Batman (as the villain Mr. Freeze). On Broadway, he co-starred in iconic dramas including:  Mr. Roberts, The Rose Tattoo, and The Teahouse of the August Moon.

   Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History salutes the consistently fine performances of Eli Wallach, and his monumental accolade tonight!

   A new independent bookstore has just added Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History. Gatsby Books in Long Beach, CA is the newest home for my paperback. According to their website and Facebook page:

   The owner of the store is Sean Richard Moor, a remarkably friendly person, who has decided to go all out in the promotion of my paperback. On Saturday, February 26th, 2011, Sean is planning an Academy Award’s® Party and booksigning at Gatsby. I’ll be providing history behind this storied ceremony, autographing my book, and we’ll also test your knowledge with an Oscar® quiz, with a prize going to the winner.

   Let me take a moment to personally thank my friend Doreen Matsumoto for arranging the relationship between Gatsby and Forgotten Hollywood. She’s been following the progress of my book since I first put pen to paper. I truly appreciate her support.

   Incidentally, the location’s name reminds me of the novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which was first published in April of 1925. The Great Gatsby is ranked #2 in the Modern Library’s lists of the 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century. The work has been made into a motion picture four seperate times, most notably in 1974, and this version starred Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.

   Gatsby Books is located at 5535 E. Spring St., right by Bellflower Blvd. If you’re in the neighborhood, you might want to check out this really charming book shop.

   ArcLight Cinemas / Hollywood has officially put NATIONAL sales of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History at over 50%. The motion picture theatre chain is a fitting location for my paperback to reach this confirmed major milestone.

   One reason the book is selling at a brisk pace has to do (in part) with anticipated Holiday purchases. ArcLight Cinemas is stocking their Gift Shop, as have Barnes & Noble, The Hollywoodland Experience, and others in the Forgotten Hollywood family.   Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History has been busy this week. Four new Barnes & Noble Bookseller locations have added the book to their stores in two states. And, a new library branch around my Orange County home has also included the paperback to their shelves. Here are the details:

   * BARNES & NOBLE – 3 locations in Washington now carry my book. These stores are in Woodinville, Olympia, and Lakewood. This ups the number of stores in the state to 7. In addition, Escondido is now the 8th locale in the San Diego County area of California to sell my work.

    * ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARIES– The Aliso Viejo Branch has just added my book to their shelves. This compliments Irvine Heritage Park and San Clemente, which also house the paperback. The national figure currently stands at 47.

    * Soon I’ll be reporting on VISION4MEDIA‘s recent networking appearance at the AMERICAN FILM MARKET in Santa Monica. Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History has been a focus of the production company at this influential national tradeshow.

   Remarkably good news to report… Two BARNES & NOBLE BOOKSELLERS in NEW YORK have agreed to carry my paperback! These Big Apple locales guarantee the national chain will now house Forgotten Hollywood Fogotten History coast to coast.

   The 2 landmark locations are:

MANHATTAN – 2289 Broadway (at 82nd Street)

GREENWICH VILLAGE – 396 Ave. of the Americas (at 8th Street)

   In Southern California, I’ve just been offered the opportunity to do a BARNES & NOBLE book-signing at Montclair Plaza. The date of the autograph event is Sunday, February 6, 2011. This store is located at 5183 Montclair Plaza Lane in Montclair. I’ll be there from 3p – 5p with pen in hand. This will be my first B&N appearance, as well as, my first event in the Inland Empire. The Montclair location will start carrying my book for the Holidays.

   I’m also currently negotiating with a BARNES & NOBLE location in Las Vegas for a book-signing in January. More to report on this later.

   This library chain in the Canandaigua, New York area has added Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History. The Pioneer Library System (PLS) is a New York State-chartered cooperative serving the 42 public libraries in Ontario, Wayne, Livingston, and Wyoming counties.

   Just southeast of Rochester in the Western part of the state, Canandaigua was named by the Iroquois tribe of Native Americans in the region. The literal meaning of the city’s name is chosen spot. How fitting for my paperback! 45 copies are now in library branches across the U.S.

   A few of months ago I blogged about how 9 copies of Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History made its way to the various branches of the LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY. This figure compliments the 2 additions in the ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY chain. What I didn’t know – this trend was taking place across the country.

   I’m proud to announce:  2 branches have decided to add more copies of my paperback to their individual or chain of libraries for the pleasure of their readers. This means the revised total of my book on library shelves is now 44 (up from 39). Marvelous news indeed! Here is where they have been added:

   I’m happy to see that Independent bookshops in Washington State have made Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History available on demand to their customers. Both locations are important businesses in their respective neighborhoods.

   ELLIOTT BAY BOOK COMPANY– Nestled in the Capitol Hill section of Seattle, Elliott Bay is a bookshop with a great reputation. The address – 1521 10th Avenue, and is known as Seattle’s Legendary Independent Bookstore. My wife and I stayed in Capitol Hill during our recent trip.

   LIBERTY BAY BOOKS – Located on the North Kitsap Peninsula on the west side of Puget Sound, Poulsbo is a Scandinavian town nestled along Liberty Bay. Major League Baseball pitcher Aaron Sele is from the area. Until World War II, Poulsbo retained Norwegian as their primary language. Liberty Bay Books is at 18881D Front Street (a corner locale).

   Next month is special on Turner Classic Movies. Beginning November 1st, a seven-part  documentary, which chronicles the rise of Cinema, will begin airing on the cable network. It’s appropriately called Moguls & Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood. In addition, a multi-media exhibit is set to tour the nation with stops in major cities to bring this special to life. According to the TCM website:

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is bringing a bit of Hollywood history to five cities across the United States this fall as part of a special tour tied to the network’s landmark seven part documentary series, MOGULS & MOVIE STARS:  A HISTORY OF HOLLYWOOD, which premieres Monday, November 1st, at 8 p.m. (ET).

The multimedia exhibit was created to let film lovers across the country experience the MOGULS & MOVIE STARS series through interactive displays on the history of filmmaking in America. The exhibit will feature unique memorabilia, including an Oscar statuette for Casablanca (1943), and a costume worn by MOGULS & MOVIE STARS narrator Christopher Plummer in the Oscar-winning film The Sound of Music (1965).

The MOGULS & MOVIE STARS exhibit debuted in Atlanta on Oct. 18 and will deliver Hollywood glamour and history to New York, Denver and San Francisco before making its final stop in L. A.  TCM will partner with various local cable affiliates throughout the duration of the tour. “TCM’s MOGULS & MOVIE STARS exhibit allows us to bring a touch of Hollywood magic to fans across the country, while also offering a peak at the incredible stories that will be highlighted in the documentary series,” said Dennis Adamovich, senior vice president of brand and digital activation/general manager of festivals for TCM, TNT and TBS.

In addition, the exhibit will feature a dress worn by Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind (1939); a red jacket worn by Marilyn Monroe in Niagara (1953); a vest and coat worn by Rudolph Valentino in The Sheik (1921); an original bound script from Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942); a signed check from MGM to John Gilbert, the highest paid star in the silent film era; a vintage camera from the silent film era; and a demonstration of a zoetrope, an early precursor to motion pictures.

The immersive exhibit also includes interactive panels that represent different aspects of the documentary series, including The History, The Moguls, The Movie Stars and The Audience. Fans will be able to experience classic movie imagery, film facts, MOGULS & MOVIE STARS clips, touch screens with photographs of rare memorabilia from the studio era, classic movie trivia and a poll about favorite studio-era films.

   The initial reaction over the Vision4Media / Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History  theatrical development agreement has been swift and positive! After the Orange County Register carried Gary Lycan’s story yesterday…book sales have taken off on Amazon. It’s encouraging to see my work once again reach the Top 100 in a number of their Film Book categories. What an amazing day (on Sunday)!

   Also, reporters at the 2010 Edmonds International Film Festival have made this a featured account on their news sites, and in one particular case, you can see a YouTube interview (see link below). L.A.Radio.com is also promoting the news on their Monday blog, which will be made available to the local broadcasters in Southern California.

   I’m writing to you from the Best Western (Plus) Edmonds Harbor Inn in Washington State. We are already having a great weekend thanks to fabulous publicity generated from columnist Gary Lycan. On Friday, his detailed report ran on the Orange County Register website regarding the agreement made between Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History and Vision4Media (and it should also appear in the Entertainment Section of this Sunday’s edition of the newspaper). Director David C. Bojorquez has already started preparing a sizzle reel based on the book for the American Film Market in November. The goal is to set in motion the development of a theatrical documentary for film or as a television series.

Ireland, a librarian at Meadowdale High School, was buying a copy of the book to donate to the library so that students can learn about the history of Hollywood’s less-remembered stars.    My family and I are off to Washington State for our Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History book-tour through the Pacific Northwest. We’ll be making three stops in our week-long trip.

EDMONDS

2010 EDMONDS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL – On Saturday, October 23rd, I’ll be making appearances including:

EDMONDS BOOKSHOP – An autograph party is planned at 3:30p. The book store’s address is 111 5th Ave.  

EDMONDS THEATRE – VIP Red Carpet Movie Screening is on tap starting at 7:30p. The theatre is located at 415 Main St.

   My entourage (wife and dad) and I will also attend Saturday’s Mixer at The Loft, and an Awards Brunch at Cafe De Paris on Sunday. These VIP events will give us a chance to mingle with event participants including my publicist Barbara Kindness; PBS travel guru Rick Steves; and Trevor Greenfield, co-producer of the five-day Fest. It’s still not too late to purchase tickets to the various events. 

BOTHELL 

   On Monday, I’ll be having a reunion dinner with folks from the Book Publishers Network and Danforth Distribution. This will be a chance to relax with my friends who helped me publish, and who currently distribute Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History. Expected to attend isEd Nixon, a member of the BPN family.

SEATTLE

   Laurie and I plan on seeing the sites including a visit to the Space Needle, The Seattle Underground Tour, and Mount Rainier. We definitely want to take in the flavor of the Pacific Northwest. I’ll have my laptop to log in reports on my blog. I sure hope we don’t get too wet, since this is the rainy season.

   Thanks to Don Barrett of LARadio.com for reprinting a story that ran a year ago regarding Forgotten Hollywood Forgotten History’s first library addition. And, it was the very prestigious Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Since then, I’ve added 38 more libraries from across the country including the important shelves of the American Film Institute and the Writers Guild Foundation. I’m thrilled to celebrate this memorable anniversary.

   One of the wonderful (but almost forgotten) child character actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age has died. Johnny Sheffield (right) passed away from an apparent heart attack on October 15th at his home in Chula Vista. Sheffield is best known for his role as “Boy” in the Tarzan series of motion pictures, which starred Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O’Sullivan. He also apperared in a number of movies as Bomba, the Jungle Boy in the 1950’s.

   His first role was in Babes in Arms in 1939 with Mickey Rooney. He retired from show business in 1955. Johnny Sheffield was 79.
